Happy 4th Birthday, Jake!

Standard

jake4year-2

Jake,

Happy Birthday to you! You are so excited to be four and you have been reminding us all day today that you are “a big guy now.”  We are so proud of you and feel so lucky to watch you learn and grow every day.  You are fun, and exciting and challenging and spirited and a great big ball of energy all rolled into one.

jake4year-1

You remind us that life doesn’t have to fit inside the perfect cookie cutter box and that when there’s a will, there’s a way! Your excitement for life and adventure reminds us that it is important to slow down and appreciate life.  You remind us all the time that we don’t have the answers, and that it’s ok not to have those answers.

jake4year-3

Thank you for reminding us not to take life too seriously. Every day is an adventure, every day is a gift and every day has something exciting to offer.

Thank you for showing us the beauty of individuality and for sharing your zest for life.  Thank you for being exactly what this family needs–even if we don’t always know it.  You are a gift, you are delight and we are so thankful for the day you were born.  We love you and are so very proud of you.

Keep smiling, keep learning and keep questioning.  I can’t wait to see where life takes us.

I love you to the moon and back, forever and ever.  Happy birthday, little guy.

Love always,

Mommy

Happy 5th Birthday, Rachel!

My sweet Rachel,

Happy 5th Birthday!  It’s hard to believe that five years has flown by in the blink of an eye! It seems like just yesterday that we found out we were pregnant with you and now here we are–5 years later. Wow! 5 years of sharing our lives with you and you sharing your life with us.  Five years of snuggles and hugs and love.  You, my dear one, are the embodiment of the innocence of childhood. You are tenderhearted and thoughtful.  The way you talk to people and interact with those around you makes them feel like you really “see” them for who they are.  Several of your teachers and many of our friends have told us how special you are, and that they feel like when you talk to them, you are really talking to them and seeing them for who they are.  That is uncommon, especially for someone so young.

img_2454

Yesterday when you woke up on your birthday, there was snow on the ground! How exciting! You were so happy to see snow and patiently asked if we could go for a walk in it.  Out on our walk you told me that you thought it was really nice that God gave you snow on your birthday, and that “he must really, really know what my heart really wants.” Often times you’ll say things like this that makes me pause and reflect on what is happening in my life.  Jesus tells us we should be more like the children, and you remind me of that verse often just by being you.  You are sweet, sensitive and kind, and open and accepting.  You don’t notice if anyone is different, and in fact, you know that we are all different–and that is ok with you! You are patient and eager to learn.  You see the best in people and hope for the best in situations.  You trust and just know that everything is always going to be ok.  You might not think that a 5 year old could have all of these qualities, but you are proof that that is not true!img_2483

Out of all of your special qualities, I feel like you need to know how much I love watching you grow into your role as a sister. You are an amazing big sister.  You are so patient and kind to Jake each and every day.  He is a big huge ball of energy and often times we tell you that he is still learning how to behave, but you always take it in stride.  Thank you for being such a wonderful big sister and taking it upon yourself to try to encourage Jake by showing him “how to be good” (you have always been a pleaser!), you make us proud every day!

img_2509

For your birthday this year we took another trip to the American Girl store and let you pick out an outfit for Polka Dot, your favorite Bitty Baby.  You take Polka Dot with you everywhere and I have a feeling that Polka Dot is going to be around for a long time to come.  I love seeing glimpses of the Mommy I hope you will become some day when you play with Polka Dot.  You are so, so sweet with babies–real or not!

img_2598

One thing  is for sure, my girl.  Your Daddy, Jakie and I are so very lucky and blessed to have you as a part of our lives.  You might feel like we are teaching you and helping you grow into a better person, but in truth you are the one who is teaching us and helping us to become better people too.  Thank you for showing us that there is living proof that goodness and kindness can prevail in this world.  The world is a better and brighter place with you in it.

I love you forever, to the moon and back until the end of time.

Love always,

Mommy

Happy birthday to our lovable, energetic, wild and super sweet baby Jake! Life in your eyes is like one big party.   From the moment you wake up, to the moment you go to sleep–you never, ever, EVER stop moving. Ever.  You love to play with trucks and cars and have recently started loving anything and everything Star Wars.  IMG_9596

IMG_9591

Earlier today when I asked you what you wanted to do, you said “Dump water on something.”  That pretty much sums up what life with you is like.  It’s expecting the unexpected, looking for fun in every situation and not being afraid to bring a little bit (or a lot) of love and laughter to each moment.  Some times your Dad and I feel like we’re not sure where exactly all of your spunk and energy came from, but we know that we are blessed to be your parents and so lucky to have you as a part of our family.

IMG_9622

You play hard and you love hard, and for all these things and more we will be forever grateful that you are our boy.  I can’t wait to see where life takes you, or more appropriately in your case, where you are going to take your life.  Thank you for reminding us that beauty and fun can be found all around us.  From chasing a falling leaf, or clapping for motorcycles passing by, or when you’re just looking for something to “dump some water on,” you always show us that there is good and happiness just waiting to be found in this world.

I love you to the moon and back.  More than you could ever know.

A Weekend to Remember

Standard

Rachelweekend2-7Rachel,

The weekend before your fourth birthday was a fun one! We celebrated your birthday with a party at Monkey Joes! You loved bouncing around on the different bounce houses, as long as they did not include a slide! You said that you felt like the slides were just a little bit too high for you and that you would just rather jump than slide.  Go right ahead, little girlie, jump until your heart’s content!

We had pizza and cake and icecream and tons of fun with all of your friends and family that came to celebrate with you!

The next day we traveled to the American Girl store where, after much deliberation, you picked out your first doll, Jessie.  We had lunch at the cafe together where they even had a special seat for Jessie so she could join us for lunch too! Later in the day, we visited the Disney store where you were given an extra special gift from Mickey Mouse himself–what a treat! You enjoyed your special message from Mickey and have worn your pin with pride almost every day since then.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Jake!

Standard

Happiest of birthdays to you, baby Jake! You are our smiling, happy go lucky, sweet little boy.  You can be found at any given point of any given day reading, emptying drawers, or playing with your trucks.  No pair of shoes is safe with you around–you claim them all as your own! You LOVE to run and jump and kick soccer balls.  It certainly didn’t take long for you to learn to push yourself on the scooter, and did we mention you taught Rachel how to drive the PowerWheels Corvette? JakeTurnsTwo-2

There are so many things I’d like to say to you about how sweet you are and how precious you will always be to me, but my words are failing me right now.  Instead I have a little bit of a lump in my throat thinking about that teeny tiny baby that I held in my arms the first day you were born. So delicate and sweet. I remember your tiny little hands and how they would grasp to hold on to mine anytime yours were set free.  I knew right away that you were “my” little baby, the one that I had prayed for since I was a little girl, given to us to bring so much love and joy to our family.  Since then you have done that and so much more! We love you more than anything, sweet babe!

JakeTurnsTwo-28

Sometimes it’s still surreal for me to think about all those times I prayed for you before you were born.  I remember praying for my future children when I was just a little girl…and now here you and your sister are.  I had no idea what you were going to look like or act like, or how your little personality would light up my life, but I knew that I would love you always–because I already did! You are such a blessing little Jake, I hope you always remember that.

JakeTurnsTwo-47

Thank you for reminding me that it’s o.k. if things don’t always go according to plan.  Thank you for reminding me that it’s o.k. to smile…even if people don’t smile back, that doesn’t take away from the smile that you gave.  You help me to appreciate the little things in life.  I’ve never paid as much attention to birds flying by, ants crawling on the ground, or cars stopping at a stop sign before you were born.  When the wind blows, you stop and close your eyes just to be able to feel it blow across your face.  I could cry at the sweetness of your innocence and it reminds me what life is all about.  Thank you for that, Jake.

You are the best Jake I could ever ask for.  Thank you for being so precious and perfect for our family.  Being your Mom is truly one of the greatest blessings in my life.  I love you always, little Jake.

Happy Birthday, little buddy.  xoxo

Two and a Half Year Old Rachel

Standard

Sweet girl

Rachel,

Who knew two and a half years could be so sweet? It’s hard to really even imagine what life was like before you were born; I seem to remember it in little snippets here and there but then I think “wait, was she really not born then??” You fit in so perfectly with our lives and just kind of blended right in to where your Daddy’s and my life path was taking us.  Life was changing all around us when you were born but it seemed like a natural transition, an easy and perfect kind of love churned together with your perfect little infant self that taught us what love and life is really all about.  It’s hard to believe that you are two and a half…on the downward slope towards three! Three! I can hardly stand the thought of it…can’t you just stay a baby a bit longer? I love you so much…

Twirling away

So much growth and change happens from 2 to 2 1/2 years old, I just had to write to you about it.  You still (of course) love to run, but now you love to have races with other people! You pump your arms and go, go, go “like the wind!” you’ll say.  You come up with the funniest sayings that I would never expect a two year old to say.  You are quick to give hugs and kisses and are always willing to have unexpected visitors or friends to play with.  It’s not uncommon for you to tell me that you love me “so much” (and it never stops melting my heart!).  You love to read and your favorite book is “The Night Before Christmas.” We read it every.single.night. But I love you for it! 🙂 At least you know what you like! That is true with most things when it comes to you.  You want what you want when you want it and if you don’t want it, you’ll be sure to let us know.  Take these pictures, for example. I wanted to get pictures of you for this entry, but the only way you would oblige is if you could race up and down the sidewalk.  Throw in a few twirls and a few strategically timed arm pumps…and then you were happy to indulge me.  Before that you were saying “No, Mommy, I no want to go outside.  I no want to wear a dress no more. I NO want to take my picture!” 🙂 You have a quick temper but are just as quick to follow it up with a hug and a kiss and an apology.  You have a huge heart that is very thoughtful and kind to others but you are also very sensitive.

Pumping your arm as you run

Pumping your arm as you run

If I were to take a video of your time awake during the day, I would guesstimate that 90-95%% of it would be video of you talking.  You love to talk and you love to engage others in conversation.  It’ just part of who you are.  It doesn’t matter if we are at the grocery store or sitting on our front porch–you will talk to anyone and everyone you can. You are afraid of flies and bees and any kind of bug.  You love to hunt for butterflies and to help me water the flowers at night.  You insist on holding part of the hose as well so you can really feel like you’re doing it too.  You love to help me put groceries away and to help me do the laundry.  Your favorite things to do usually involve playing with your water table or going to visit the horses at a nearby college.

This is your pouty face

Jake Man is your best buddy and you two have such a fun time together.  We are so blessed that you have taken to your Big Sister role so easily. You tell Jake all day long that he’s “so cute” or “so soft.” 🙂 You are gentle and loving and a true nurturer.  At this point, you love to wear dresses and refuse to wear shorts on a regular basis.  You are rarely ever seen without your doctor’s kit and are quick to give “check-ups” to people and stuffed animals alike. Although you give your best effort on the regular to eat cookies for lunch (“Mommy, I please have cookie please?”) you are also quite satisfied with your Daddy’s grilled cheese instead. rachel2

You make up your own songs and sing along to ones you know.  Somewhere along the line you learned how to sing your ABC’s and Jesus Loves Me and we haven’t gone a day without hearing them since.  You love to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Curious George on TV.  And who could forget Polka Dot baby…your baby doll that you insist sleeps with you each night.

Rachel, all these things that make up who you are are just little tidbits into the every day happenings of your life.  I am regularly amazed at your kindness and sweetness and your tenacity for life.  For just a two and a half year old little girl, you have completely stolen my heart and changed my perspective on the world.  I thank you for that.  Thank you for reminding me that love and beauty is all around us, and that we have the choice to see the beauty that our world has to offer.  Thank you for teaching me about unending love and what it means to love someone more than myself.  You have helped me learn, you have helped me grow and there’s no doubt you have made me a better person.   You make loving and living easy, sweet girl, just by being you.  Cheers to your two and a half year old self!

I love you forever, to the moon and back.

7 Month Old Jake

Standard

jake1

Can you believe it, buddy? How can it be that 7 months have gone by since I first held you in my arms? I’ll never understand how months seem like minutes when it comes to life with you and your sister. Although time is moving entirely too fast, in many ways it seems like life has always been this way. It feels like you have always been a part of my life–always there, always smiling, always willing to grab my hair and pull me in close for a slobbery gummy kiss.  It feels like we have known each other forever.  In some ways, I guess we have.  That is the beauty and blessing of creating life…we will always be apart of each other no matter what happens.  I love you, Jake.

jake17

Ok, enough sap (sorry, sometimes when I get started it’s hard to stop!), let’s get to the fun and exciting things that happened this month!

You have TWO teeth now! They popped up shortly after you turned six months old and man, you had a rough time with each of them.  Sleepless nights (more than usual), runny nose, irritability and incessant chewing on anything and everything were all indicators that we knew meant you must be working on some teeth.  And we were right! They popped up within days of each other.  Now I giggle a little when you give a big gummy grin because your first tooth is much taller than your second tooth.  I’m sure they will even out soon, but until then I will enjoy your perfectly mismatched teeth and the smiles that they bring to others.

jake2

Sitting up is your thing! It’s awesome and you love it.  You are SO proud that you can sit anywhere and every where your big sister can.  That is, until you don’t want to sit up any more and then you just quietly decide to face plant yourself into the floor like it’s no big deal.  Sitting’s fun…until it’s not 🙂 And even then I love your spunk and your ability to know what you want when you want it! Life is good with you around, my little friend.

jake13

You prefer certain toys now.  You love your Mickey and your Sophie Giraffe and your car keys.  Pulling your sisters hair is always a favorite past time of yours as well.  I think the pulling is just an unfortunate consequence of you just wanting to touch her all the time.  If she is near, you reach for her and squeal for her.  You try to pull her close to you and gave your first semi-wave to her this month.  There’s no doubt in my mind that she is your hero.  She should be.  She loves you so much too, Jake Man.

jake14

I love watching you sleep with your hands tucked behind your head.  I love how your face lights up when Daddy comes home from work.  I love how you snuggle in close when it’s time for bed and how your breathing slows as you relax and drift off to sleep… You smile when you’re happy, cry when you’re sad, and laugh when you are amused. All these things–these little tiny things that make up who you are in this moment I hope I will remember as the years go by.  I hope I will remember how the rolls on your legs looked or how your delicate little hand would rest itself on your leg.  I hope I remember your pouty face and your happy face and every face in between.  I hope I can remember all of you all of the time.  Maybe some day this blog will take me back 🙂 Back to the “good old days” because I’m pretty confident that these are it….

jake15

You are a gift, little Jake.  I am so thankful and blessed that I was chosen to be your mommy.  Thank you for being the person I didn’t even know I needed.  You have taught me so much already and I love you more than words could ever say.

Love always,

Mommy
